Information About Nexium – The Purple Pill:

Nexium (esomeprazole) is an anti-acid drug which is prescribed to treat the following symptoms or conditions: gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD or heartburn; acid reflux), ulcers and erosive esophagitis.

How Does Nexium Work?

This drug works by reducing the production of acid in the stomach and eliminating the symptoms of heart burn and acid reflux.

What is Acid Reflux and the foods to avoid?

Acid reflux is a condition where the stomach overproduces acid which can then backup into the lower esophagus and cause persistent heartburn. There are some foods that have high-acid contents in them, which you should avoid if you suffer from acid reflux, they include:

  • Coffees and sodas
  • Foods with red sauces
  • Citrus fruits
  • Tomatoes
  • Any high-acid food or drink

Symptoms of GERD include:

  • Warming or heating sensation in chest
  • Burning in chest
  • Heat or pain in chest
  • Acidic feeling/heat/pain/burning in the esophagus

What are the Side Effects of Nexium?

There are some side effects that can occur when taking this drug, they include the following:

  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Flatulence
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • In rare cases a serious allergic reaction can occur, which may involve the following symptoms: hives or the swelling of the lips, tongue, or face. If you experience any of these rare yet serious allergic reactions—STOP taking Nexium and seek immediate medical care

How to Take Nexium:

Only ever take this prescription drug as directed to by your doctor or a pharmacist. Take each tablet with a full glass of water and avoid crushing or breaking the tablets. If you accidentally miss a dose take it as soon as you can and keep taking your other doses as scheduled.

Nexium Precautions:

In order to avoid any drug interactions or allergic reactions from occurring it is very important that you tell your physician about ALL of the drugs you are currently taking. Women that are pregnant or who are currently nursing may not be able to take this drug, as well as those who suffer from liver disease or those who are taking drugs that contain digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral), or iron (Feosol, Mol-Iron, Fergon, and Femiron).
