Famvir (famciclovir) is an antiviral prescription drug that can be taken to prevent and suppress outbreaks of the herpes simplex virus and shingles. When taken as directed this antiviral medication has been shown to be very effective at limiting both the duration and the severity of the associated symptoms.

How Does Famvir Work?

Famvir works by attacking the herpes simplex virus in the system and slowing it down, effectively allowing the body the time which it needs to heal. The end result is a shortened duration of the outbreak and in some cases it can even prevent outbreaks from reoccurring.

• Tingling in hands

• Itching
• In rare cases, a potentially serious allergic reaction can occur which can include the following symptoms: breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips, swelling of the mouth, swelling of the tongue, swelling of the face or an outbreak of hives—if you experience any of these rare yet serious side effects, STOP taking Famvir and seek immediate medical attention.

What if I am Taking other Drugs?

Always discuss with your health care practitioner ALL of the drugs you are currently taking even if they are purchased over-the-counter, to avoid any dangerous drug interactions from occurring. Patients who are currently taking medications containing Probenecid (Benemid) may not be able to take this drug.

Famvir Precautions:

Make sure to let your doctor know if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Famvir. This drug will not prevent you from spreading the herpes simplex virus to other people. Only take this medication exactly as directed, and if you miss a dose take it at the first chance you get, and keep taking your other scheduled does. Women who are pregnant or nursing should first tell their physician before taking Famvir.
