Allegra (fexofenadine) is a prescription antihistamine which is used to treat patients who suffer from, chronic allergies, seasonal allergies, hay fever and other allergic reactions such as hives.

How Does Allegra Work?

Allegra is an antihistamine. It works by countering the chemicals that the immune system releases in response to an allergic reaction. Allegra has been clinically proven to reduce or eliminate most symptoms associated with allergic reactions.

There are several common seasonal allergies that many people experience. They include:

  • Dander allergies
  • Dust and dust mites allergies
  • Hay fever
  • Pollen allergies
  • Animal allergies

What are some Allergy Symptoms?

Allergies can strike when we least expect them to. As our bodies react there are some classic symptoms that we can experience, they include:

  • Runny nose
  • Stuffy nose
  • Watering or running eyes

What are the Side Effects of Allegra?

Like all drugs, there are some side effects that can occur when you take Allegra, they include:

  • Headache
  • Cold
  • Backache
  • Nausea
  • Coughing
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Menstrual Pain
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Diarrhea
  • In rare cases, a serious allergic reaction can occur which may involve the following symptoms: swelling of throat, lips mouth or tongue; or hives—if you experience any of these rare yet serious side effects, STOP taking Allegra and seek immediate medical assistance

How to Take Allegra:

You should only take this drug as directed to by your medical care practitioner. Most often it will be prescribed to be taken twice per day, in the morning and at night. Take each dose with a full glass of water. If you miss a dose take it at the first chance that you get. If you realize you missed a dose near to when your next dose is scheduled, skip the missed dose and keep taking your doses as scheduled. If you overdose seek medical treatment right away.

Allegra Precautions:

It is important that your doctor knows about ALL of the drugs that you are currently taking in order to avoid any interactions. Women who are pregnant or who are nursing should make sure that their doctor is informed of this prior to using this drug. Refrain from using anti-acids such as, Rolaids, Maalox, Mylanta, Milk of Magnesia, or Pepcid Complete close to when you take Allegra—these can decrease the effectiveness of the drug.
